Skamania County is located on the southern border of Washington and Oregon. At the 2010 census the population was 11,066. The county seat and largest incorporated city is Stevenson. The county was founded in 1854 and the names comes from the Cascades Chinook word skmaniak meaning swift waters. 90% of Skamania county is forest and most of that is part of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Skamania is noted as passing a “Bigfoot Ordnance.” The ordnance was an April Fools’ joke intended to protect the county from an influx of Bigfoot hunters.
Sheriff’s Information
The sheriff’s office patrols 1,684 square miles of which 28 square miles is water. The Office also protects about 12,000 residents. The patrol division employees 16 dedicated law enforcement officers and include a K9 division, Collision Investigation Team, Marine Patrol/Divers, and a Search & Rescue Team. There are 35 deputies in the sheriff’s office.
