Wahkiakum County Sheriff Information

Wahkiakum County is located on the Oregon/Washington Western border of Washington State. The 2010 population census was 3,978 and Wahkiakum County is the second least populous county in Washington. The county seat and only incorporated town is Cathlamet. The county was formed in 1854 and named for Chief Wahkiakum of the Chinook. The county operates the Wahkiakum County Ferry that connects Cathlamet to Westport, Oregon across the Columbia River.

Sheriff’s Information

The Sheriff’s Office patrols 287 square miles in the county. Twenty-four square miles is water. It is the smallest county in Washington by total land area and is just a bit larger than San Juan County and Island County which are mostly water. The office support a population of about 4,000 people.

The Sheriff’s Office includes Search & Rescue which has over 40 men and women who volunteer their time to rescue stranded or lost people.

The patrol department consists of 10 offices and one K9 (golden lab).

Wahkiakum County Records/Court Clerk

The County Clerk is an elected position. The clerk is required to be at all court sessions to establish an independent record of each earing. The clerk reviews court documents, perform acts required by law and issues warrants of arrest, orders of sale, writes of execution, garnishment, and other duties.

County Jail Information

The county jail employs 13 deputies.

Visiting hours are from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm – Tuesdays and 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm Sundays.

All visitors must be properly dressed; no gang colors. Visitors must have proper identification. Visitors under 17 must be accompanied y a parent or legal guardian.

Inmates have access to collect calls most of the day. The staff will not take phone message for inmates unless it is a verifiable emergency. Hand written messages can be dropped off at the Sheriff’s Office.

All incoming mail is searched. No mail that violates court orders will be given to the inmate.
