Whatcom County Sheriff Information

Whatcom County is located along the Canadian border. The population at the 2010 census was 201,140 and the county seat is Bellingham. The county is also bordered by the Strait of Georgia. The county was created in 1854 and the name comes from the Lummi word Xwotqom meaning noisy water.

County Jail Information

The county jail is operated by Corrections Bureau and Interim Work Center. The jail is maximum-security facility and houses approximately 245 prisoners daily. The work center averages 130 minimum or low-medium custody inmates.

Acceptable items can be sent via the US Mail. Letter are ok as are US Postal money order, photographs, and newspaper clippings. Inmates are limited to no more than 20 pieces of mail at any time. Incoming mail is opened and inspected for contraband.

Employment in the Sheriff’s Office

All positions are run through Civil Service. The Sheriff’s office does maintain an eligibility list of entry-level, lateral entry, and certified entry deputy sheriff and corrections deputy candidates.
