Island County is in the northwestern portion of Washington State and is composed entirely of islands. Whidbey and Camano are the largest islands with seven small island making up the County. Island County was created in 1852 and is the eighth oldest county in Washington. The county seat is Coupeville and the largest city is Oak Harbor. As of 2010 the population was 78,506.

The jail was remodeled with additional space in 1983 and is a traditional linear style or cell block and dormitory. The facility is designed to house up to 58 inmates at a given time.

Employment in the Sheriff’s Office
The Civil Service Commission is charges with recruitment and examination process. The Chief Examiner screens and tests applicants for position in the Sheriff’s Office. Only those who have passed Civil Service Examination are eligible for hire.
